“Hello, I’m Kenzie! I’m 18 years old, and I’ve had VSS for most of my life. I remember when I was around 7 or 8 I was watching something on tv and all of a sudden, I started seeing static everywhere. I told my mom about it, but she said to not worry about it and that it was probably just floaters. I was so focused on it for weeks, but when I finally realized it wouldn’t go away, I just learned to live with it.
I never really talked about it because I thought no one would understand. Up until 2 years ago, I always thought I was alone. That’s when I came across the VSS community and realized I wasn’t alone anymore. I was finally able to show my mom what it looked like to see through my eyes. It doesn’t go away, even when I close my eyes. It’s caused me to be very sensitive to light. I have to sleep with a sleep mask on, just in case someone turns on my bedroom light in the morning. Sometimes, if I’ve been in a dark room for a while and someone immediately turns on the lights, I get intense headaches and also get nauseous.
I’ve learned to live with VSS, I’ve had it for most of my life. Honestly, I can’t remember a time when I didn’t see the static everywhere. Sometimes it’s comforting to me, because it’s something familiar, other times, it’s a pain. I’ve learned to live with it, and I’m very happy to say, I’m not alone anymore.”
